Recommended SQL Server Setup & Maintenance
The following are recommendations on to set up your SQL server instance running VendMAX. These are only recommendations that should be reviewed by customer’s SQL Database administrator and/or qualified IT Professional. Streamware is not responsible for the installation, setup and/or maintenance of SQL Server Configuration and databases.

  1. Configure the SQL Server Transaction Log, temporary database and VendMAX data file on separate physical drives than the Operating System.
  2. Recommend configuring the database properties so that SQL Server Transaction Log file does not grow larger than the database file (ex: restrict file growth, options for auto shrink, Recovery model, etc)
  3. Recommend RAID 5 or 10 configurations for VendMAX data file.
  4. Recommend no RAID or mirroring for temporary data base on hard drive.
  5. Recommend RAID 1 for SQL Server Transaction Log on hard drive
  6. Nightly backup of VendMAX data file & SQL Server Transaction Log.
  7. Weekly rebuild of indexes and consistency check.
  8. Streamware recommends frequent (hourly if possible) backups of SQL Server Transaction Log. Discuss with your IT Professional to determine optimal frequency for your particular situation and server configuration.
  9. Authentication should be set to Mixed Mode (Windows and SQL).
  10. Periodic archiving/purging of data may be necessary.

Additional Considerations
o Before purchasing new hardware to these specifications, investigate carefully with your IT support professional whether you can effectively upgrade your existing system to equivalent capabilities and avoid or postpone investment in new hardware. The typical life expectancy of computer hardware is 3-5 years, but can vary because of many factors, including technological obsolescence and enhancements to operating systems and services.
o For purchase of new equipment, we suggest you obtain at least two quotations for hardware and services. Ensure your providers itemize all of the components in their proposals, including their consulting and installation services, and clearly show the associated costs for each. Have your providers explain how the equipment proposed relates to the specification and discuss with them possible lower-cost alternatives.
o Business growth must always be considered as a factor which can place a greater load on existing computing hardware and may require a hardware upgrade to maintain acceptable performance. Consider recent changes in your level of business and the impact of possible future growth on capacity and performance. Plan your capital investment accordingly.
